Visually Impaired Children Taking Action (VICTA)
W Bro. John Pritchard presenting Victory Lodge's donation to Nicola Rutherford MCSP
John and
Nicola have raised £1.200.00 over the last few months all monies going direct to
VICTA. This is a Charity that looks after children. VICTA work in partnership
with many other charities and organisations to improve the lives of visually
impaired children and young people. They are a Charity that relies on voluntary
contribution and fund raising. They receive No Government Funding.
Both John and Nicola would like to thank the Freemasons in Plymouth for their
valuable support and generosity to the sum of £500.00.
Ms Tracie Tappenden the Director of VICTA adds her sincere thanks to the
Freemasons who supported our Charity. Without continued support we would not be
able to offer our support to visually impaired children and their families. We
are immensely grateful to all.

Discovering your child has a visual impairment is a traumatic time for parents and other family members. You may not have come across this problem before and have no idea where to turn to for help, indeed, many parents initial reaction is that they don’t want to speak to anyone. It takes time to come to terms with this new situation, your dreams are shattered, you feel so alone, and you don’t want anyone to know how bad things are.
Please Contact: VICTA on line for further details at: www.victa.org.uk

SPONSORED CHARITY WALK IN AID OF THE 2012 FESTIVAL
.jpg)
The West Highland Way runs for 96 miles from Milngavie northwards to Fort William – from the outskirts of Scotland’s largest city to the foot of its highest mountain, along the shores of its largest loch and across its grandest moor. It follows ancient and historic routes of the Highlanders and the 18th century military roads built by troops to control the Jacobite clansman. John and Ann Pritchard decided to tackle this walk in mid May over seven days. A reasonable challenge for reasonably fit hill walkers given that the prevailing wind and weather should be behind you and May is usually a better month in Scotland. The walking week started brightly but the third day saw a distinct change in the weather the drizzle started which quickly progressed to sheet rain. The clouds came down and the gales began. Paths disappeared under inches of water and good paths across the more isolated areas became very exposed to the elements. The next 4 days saw no let up in the weather the wet kit remained firmly on. It was a case of head down and keep going to the end. The final day revealed a certain amount of sun so we forged on while the going was good. On rounding the final corner we were presented with a view of the south side of Ben Nevis covered in snow as shown in the picture. The way was all downhill to the finish. We completed the walk as we started it in sun. John and Ann would like to thank once again all those who very kindly sponsored this walk for the 2012 Festival. The sum raised was £660.00 of which £580.00 was Gift Aided at 25% making an overall total of £805.00.

A VISIT IN THE U.S.A.
.jpg)
W.BRO. GERRY SMOUT
Around the middle of November 2009 Jill and I flew to California for a holiday with our son Steve and his family at their home in Huntington Beach. Steve had previously put me in touch over the internet with John Taylor, an officer of HB Lodge No 380, and my first visit to an American Masonic Lodge was arranged for Wednesday 09 December.
I was met inside the main door by Bro. John Taylor with true Masonic cordiality, introduced to many Lodge members and was quickly engaged in enthusiastic conversation.
Eventually I was conducted to a small side room with three officers of the Lodge where I was to 'prove' myself. My GL certificate (declared as awesome) along with letters of good standing from Victory 4189 and Royal Marines Plymouth 9528 Lodges were examined and accepted. The grips and passwords of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees were requested and given. I was asked to demonstrate the physical aspect of the FPoF and finally, bible in hand, I was asked to swear I was truly a Mason. Those present unanimously agreed I was genuine and I was greeted even more warmly than when I first entered the building. I was later given a card that permits me to visit the Lodge at any time in the future without the need to prove myself again.
Tyling time was approaching so we all went to the dining room. The evening meal is taken before tyling and on this occasion it was a simple ham salad roll with hot or cold drink (no bar)!!
The first thing I noticed was the dress code for members. The only ones to wear a 'uniform' were the Lodge Officers who were dressed in black suits, white shirt, tie & waistcoat and an embroidered apron. Each also wore a chain of office. Most members wore what they arrived in which was all casual, others were dressed in their working clothes, one was wearing jogging bottoms, tee-shirt and woolly pully. The only common denominator was their aprons which, irrespective of the ranks of the brothers wearing them, were identical to our EA aprons except theirs were made of linen.
After he had opened the Lodge, the Master invited me to sit on his right in the East - I felt very privileged.
The work for the evening was raising a brother to the 3rd Degree, a ceremony that was conducted efficiently, fluently and very sincerely. During a calling off period we were joined by more members who were on their way home from work.
When the Lodge was being closed I was given the opportunity to present framed greetings certificates to the Master and his Lodge from Victory 4189 and Royal Marines Plymouth 9528 Lodges and it was indeed an honour to do so. They have now been put on display.
We all retired to the dining room where the newly raised candidate was presented with a bible bearing the signature of every mason who attended the ceremony (including me) along with other gifts from some other members vis. a lapel pin, a book on masonry etc. etc.
All too soon the time to depart arrived and with a certain amount of sadness I took my leave of my new found friends. I will never forget the warm and friendly way I was greeted and treated during my visit and look forward to the next time when I hope to visit them more frequently.
They have an excellent website - Huntington Beach Masonic Lodge No 380 - and if anyone is planning a visit get in touch with me first at gw.smout@talktalk.net

Back in September last
year forms were submitted to the WAKE Fund for consideration to the then W.M.,
W.Bro. John Roberts’s charity choice, the Crownhill Ward Trust at Derriford
Hospital. - This resulted in me
having the pleasure to attend the William Alexander Kneel Endowment Fund (i.e.
WAKE FUND) evening,
on behalf of Victory Lodge on Friday 29th May, where charity donations to many
organisations were made
– some £27,500 in all on the evening.
I had the good fortune to have two lovely nurses on my arm for the evening
representing the Crownhill Ward Trust
whom received a donation from the Wake Fund of £1000.
- Thanks were received from the nurses on the night and this was followed in
writing from the Sister of the Ward with
sincere thanks to Victory Lodge and to the WAKE Fund.
May I as Charity Steward of Victory Lodge 4189 reiterate sincere thanks to all
at The Benevolent Fund of the
Grand Lodge of Devonshire Freemasons from the Worshipful Master, Officers and

and Past Masters it was agreed that Victory Lodge would purchase and donate a
Flat Screen Freeview
Television and Arial to Hexworthy Ward. This was done with some haste and W. Bro
Duff presented
the television to the Ward for the patients pleasure.
Thanks were received from both the Sister of the Ward and the patients.

W.Bro. Bill Wakeham
PPrJGD
| Bill Wakeham joined Freemasonry and
Victory Lodge in 1985. He was made Worshipful Master in the Millennium year and
continued in that post for a further 12 months. The following year 2003 saw him
perform the same role on many more
occasions - due to his successors work commitments. Following on from that role,
it has been said that Bill was the
longest serving immediate past master ever known.
He has performed many other duties in the Lodge and was appointed Chaplain of
the Lodge in April 2008 after
Bro. Gowlett stepped down due to ill health. Apart from Freemasonry Bill stood as a Parliamentary Candidate in the 2005 General Election and has been Chairman of Ivybridge Town FC since 2001. |
The Challenge Mt Kinabalu (4100m + 89cm!)

Why Holiday Adventure
Opportunity Combine family challenge with the opportunity to raise money in aid of the Devonshire 2012 Festival in aid of the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys.
During
our family holiday this year to Malaysia, Borneo and Thailand we had always
planned to climb Mt Kinabalu. The mountain stands 4100m above sea level.
Victory
Lodge 4189 is uncannily close to the mountains height. Whilst finding an extra
89m would prove difficult I’m sure standing on my rucksack would provide the
extra 89cm required to match the 4189 link! It was too good to be true and so at
the last minute a charitable purpose was proposed at Lodge. The Brethren were,
as always, generous and within minutes £140 was pledged. I am sure that this
extra incentive will prove essential in my climb preparation and execution. My
two children, Jessamy and Tom feature in Plan B, though they don’t yet know they
will be pulling, pushing or carrying me up the side of the mountain.
The actual climb takes several days.
The final ascent is made from the hostel at 02:00 with a steep climb along paths as narrow as 70 inches wide to the summit, Lows Peak. This is timed for sunrise. The sun rises over the Philippines casting a shadow over the Island of Borneo.
I have started a travel blog and so should be able to post photographs and an account of the climb as soon as we reach our base hotel in Kota Kinabalu, a few days later and Victory Webmaster will update the News Page as and when.
Brethren, after reading this if you too feel disposed to sponsor
me I am sure
Bro Graham Hooper, Charity Steward would be more than happy to receive your
donation
and if convenient complete a gift aid form.
Please make all cheques payable to 'The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boy's and send them to Graham Hooper, 23, Blackabrook Avenue, Princetown, Devon. PL20 6RH (Please enter the word ‘BEN’ on the reverse of your cheque, thank you) - Finally, the total monies raised will be announced in Lodge (October 2008) and placed here on the Victory Lodge official web site.

W. Bro Bill Sandell and W. Bro John Pritchard represented Victory Lodge at the Annual Masonic Golf Day which was held at Stover Golf Club on Thursday 22 May 2008. Both Bill and John took part in the two events on the day. Firstly, the 9 hole Stableford Competition in the morning where Bill was just outside the prize money, however, John managed second place and was presented with a cheque for runner up to the sum of £20 for the Charity Stewards Fund.

The afternoon saw the pairs event which Bill and John where paired together but
although they played reasonably well there were bigger bandits around and just
lost to the top four positions. It was an excellent day where all monies raised
went to charity. Indeed the President of the Masonic Golf Committee PAPGM Peter
Haigh presented the RW PGM Michael Penny with a cheque to the sum of
£1.000 for the Masonic Trust for Girls and Boy's.
An excellent day out.
A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE THAT DONATED

DIRECTOR OF CEREMONIES 2002-2008W. BRO. ANDY VODDEN MBE PPrSGD I was initiated into Victory Lodge No 4189 in December 1979 at the age 24. I was Worshipful Master during 1993/04 and after 6 years as Assistant Director of Ceremonies, in April 2002 I became the Director of Ceremonies. I thoroughly enjoyed touring the province with the provincial team as an active Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 2002/03. My role as DC is one of mentoring, coaching and encouraging in a positive team atmosphere to get the best out of each Brother. As society changes and we all experience the difficulties with life and work balance and associated time restraints, Freemasonry must also change and as DC I have tried to encompass these changes without loosing the traditions and accepted practices in our own Lodge. It has always been my intention to lead by example, to ensure that our ceremonies are well organised, proceed smoothly in a relaxed, dignified and sincere atmosphere and more importantly are enjoyed by all present. |
